“The Competition,” as I remember it at the theater, was a gorgeous, magnificently photographed love story about two aspiring concert pianists caught up in an international piano competition. As presented on ABC through the magic of editing, “The Competition” was a superficial, pulpy, low-budget TV movie, reduced in size for the benefit of a mass television audience that prefers Madonna to Mozart, as well as to make easier the customary insertion of five-minute commercial breaks.
