Van Nuys Team Opens Babe Ruth Tourney Today

The Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Babe Ruth All-Star team will play the winner of the Lodi-Arizona game today in its Pacific Southwest regional opener at Lodi, Calif.
The nine-team, double-elimination tournament includes representatives from Guam, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and California. The winner will advance to the World Series in Jamestown, N.Y., Aug. 16-24.
Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks qualified for the tournament by winning the district playoffs in Glendale and the Southern California finals in Culver City.
Last year, the Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks representative won the regional and advanced to the World Series in Niles, Mich., where it placed third. Lodi met Arizona on Friday night to open the tournament.
