Civilian Review of Military Health Care Approved

WASHINGTON — The Defense Department’s top health official formally directed the Army, Air Force and Navy on Friday to prepare for quality-assurance reviews of their military hospitals by civilian physicians.
Dr. William Mayer, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, announced his decision to the surgeons general of the three services during a meeting of the Defense Health Council.
Mayer told the surgeons general that he expected a new system of civilian peer review organizations to be established in each state no later than Jan. 1, said a Pentagon official who asked not to be named.
The military health system has been buffeted in recent months by reports of substandard practices.
