FACE-SLAPPING AT SALZBURG FESTIVAL

SALZBURG, Austria — Tension between Italian opera director Piero Faggioni and Salzburg Festival official Otto Sertl at rehearsals of Verdi’s opera “Macbeth” dissolved in face slapping Thursday.
Sources said that Faggioni twice slapped the face of the Austrian official, but festival spokesman Hans Widrich said it was not clear whether Sertl, the festival’s secretary general, paid back “in kind.”
The incident occurred during the rehearsal for Verdi’s “Macbeth,” scheduled for Tuesday.
Widrich told a reporter of the Austria Press Agency that relations between the two men had been “simmering at the boiling point” for several days.
