A 23-year-old man was wounded when he reportedly pointed a rifle at a detective searching for a robbery-homicide suspect in the Hollywood area, Los Angeles police officials said Thursday.
According to Lt. Charles Higbie, officers went to a house in the 6400 block of Homewood Avenue looking for Richard Smith, 30, sought in the robbery and murder of a man in Southwest Los Angeles Sunday.
A man later identified as Lawrence R. Wilkens tried to flee out the back door, Higbie said.
He was shot in the foot and thigh when he allegedly aimed his carbine at Detective Joe E. Lewis, 39.
Wilkens was booked at County-USC Medical Center on suspicion of assault on a police officer.
