Two Marines were killed Wednesday when their reconnaissance plane crashed during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton.
The victims were identified Thursday as Capt. Edward H. McDaniel, 28, an aerial observer from Colorado Springs, Colo., and 1st Lt. Darrell S. Tipples, 36, a pilot who resided on base. Both were assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 39 at Camp Pendleton.
The crewmen died instantly when their OV-10 Bronco went down about 10:30 a.m. near Interstate 5 south of the San Onofre immigration checkpoint, a base spokesman said.
The crash occurred as the pilot was maneuvering the twin-engine turbo prop observation craft toward a communications site.
Military officials are investigating the cause of the crash, said Marine spokesman Sgt. Art Alejandre.
