Petroleum use in the United States declined.

The American Petroleum Institute reported a 2.2% drop in petroleum use for the first six months of 1985 from the same period a year earlier as industries and electric utilities switched to other fuels. The monthly report said petroleum imports by the United States fell 2% in June from a year earlier, the smallest such decline this year. For the first half of the year, imports were off 11.5%.
