Residents will get a new trash collector on July 1 and will pay 7% less for service. Western Waste Industries of Los Angeles was given a five-year contract to serve the city’s 4,600 single-family homes after the company underbid Browning-Ferris Industries of Gardena, which had the contract for eight years. Western Waste will charge each home $13.75 a month for trash collection. Although Browning-Ferris bid below its present rate, it came in at $13.85--10 cents higher than Western Waste. Businesses and apartments have separate commercial service.

Several residents said Browning-Ferris had proven itself over eight years and should not be replaced by a new carrier despite the 10-cent-a-month savings to homeowners. But the City Council said both companies are highly qualified and the contract was awarded last week to the low bidder. “I echo residents’ feelings that BFI has been good, but we have to uphold the integrity of the bidding system,” said Mayor James Kinney.
