Buchenwald Camp Victims Remembered

BUCHENWALD, East Germany — Germans on Thursday honored the 65,000 people, most of them Jews, who perished in Adolf Hitler’s notorious Buchenwald concentration camp.
The ceremonies marked the 40th anniversary of the camp’s dramatic liberation, in which inmates overpowered Nazi SS guards as American forces approached the camp in World War II.
Hans Otto Braeutigam, the head of Bonn’s permament mission in Communist East Germany, laid a wreath at a monument on the site of the camp--now a museum--on behalf of West German President Richard von Weiszaecker.
The main anniversary of the uprising is scheduled to be observed on Saturday. Former inmates from all over the world are expected to attend.
