Catholic Alumni ‘Squeeze In’ at Their Costa Mesa Dances

The Catholic Alumni Club of Costa Mesa is part of a national organization for unmarried college graduates in their 20s and 30s, according to club President Kathleen Doughterty. Formed in 1958, the 300-member Orange County chapter organizes a variety of activities, including volleyball games, ski trips, parties and happy hours (called “TGIFs”). Every three months, the club also holds a “Squeeze-In” dance at the Westin South Coast Plaza. Why “Squeeze-In”? “For two reasons,” Doughterty said. “The national chapter called it that because we’re in Orange County--like ‘squeeze an orange.’ The other reason is we squeeze people in; about 600 or 700 people attend.”
There is also a business meeting on the second Sunday of each month, which Doughterty encouraged prospective members to attend “because it provides a good atmosphere for getting to know people. Then, when you go to a party or TGIF, you’ll see familiar faces.” The club’s annual membership fee is $25, which covers printing and mailing costs of the monthly newsletter.
