Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa was banned from leaving his hometown of Gdansk without permission in the toughest action against the Nobel Peace Prize winner since his release from prison in 1982. Walesa said he was told by the Gdansk state prosecutor that he is suspected of inciting public unrest by calling for a 15-minute general strike to protest food price hikes. The strike was called off after the government agreed to a phased price increase.
