VITORIA, Spain — The chief of the regional police force in Spain’s Basque country was killed Thursday in a car bomb blast, officials said.
Lt. Col. Juan Carlos Diaz Arcocha, 52, died from multiple injuries after triggering a bomb that was planted under his car.
He was the first member of the force to be killed since it was formed in 1982. Police said the assassination appeared to be the work of the separatist movement ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom).
