Northridge Wins, 5-3, and Sweeps Sun Devils

TEMPE, Ariz. — Jimmy Mitchell’s RBI single broke a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning as defending NCAA Division II champion Cal State-Northridge beat Arizona State 5-3 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday.
Mitchell’s clutch hit came off Sun Devil reliever Mike Thorpe (3-1) and preceded another run-scoring single by Todd Mustin.
Arizona State had tied the game on Don Wakamatsu’s two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
Northridge took a 3-1 lead in the eighth on Mark Ban’s RBI single and Paul Kaplan’s two-run homer.
Glenn Braybrooks (1-0) got the win for the Matadors, now 6-1 after sweeping the two-game series against Arizona State, which fell to 5-6 with its third straight loss.
