2 Air Force Cadets Face Drug Charges

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two Air Force Academy cadets could be court-martialed and seven others found to have used illegal drugs may be forced to serve their military commitments elsewhere, an official said today.

Two cadets were charged with possession and sale of marijuana and cocaine and face possible court-martial proceedings. They were identified as Glenn R. Mack, 21, a junior from Jonesboro, Ark., and Andrew F. Smith, a sophomore from Danville, Calif.

Seven others, whose names have not been released, are believed only to have been users, academy spokesman Capt. Will Ketterson said, and will not face courts-martial.

The cadets have been under investigation since a raid on quarters Jan. 28, but will continue to attend classes until they receive formal orders, officials said.

The seven who have not been charged could be dismissed from the school and fined, or dismissed and forced to serve their military commitments elsewhere, Capt. Jan Wood said. Two of those cadets have submitted formal letters of resignation.

Under Air Force regulations, cadets who are juniors or seniors are liable for either two or three years of military service as enlisted personnel. If they are freshmen or sophomores, they have no military commitment.
