The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is telling its top management employees that they may be fired or demoted for refusing transfers to the agency’s 10 district offices, but the commission says the new policy won’t be used as punishment. The new policy, detailed in a Jan. 3 memo, will take effect in March, according to Al Maltz, assistant staff director for administration. Staff Director Linda Chavez said the relocation policy, which is being implemented at her direction, is designed not to punish staff members who disagree with commission policies but “to give ourselves flexibility.”
