UCI Beats Chapmman in Tennis

UC Irvine survived an upset to No. 1 singles player Stephen Aniston Tuesday to beat Chapman College, 6-3, in a nonconference men’s tennis match at the Santiago Canyon Tennis Club in Orange.
Aniston, the 16th-ranked player in the country, was upset by Troy Turnbull, 6-2, 7-5. Neil Amor countered with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Chapman’s Paul Charlesworth to give Irvine a 4-2 lead after singles play.
Irvine (6-0) is ranked 14th among NCAA Division 1 teams. The Anteaters play host to San Jose State in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. match today at 1:30.
In women’s tennis action:
Cal State Long Beach 5, UC Irvine 4--Lisa Brenner and Havaja Frljuckic scored three-set wins in singles play to lead the 49ers to the win at Long Beach. Colleen Patton and Libby Defpot recorded singles wins for Irvine (5-2).
Cal State Northridge 9, Chapman College 0--Northridge lost only one game in spoiling Chapman’s first varsity match.
