Young Sharp in Scrimmage With Gold

Steve Young passed for a pair of touchdowns, but the Los Angeles Express couldn’t hold a 10-point halftime lead and played to a 17-17 tie with the Denver Gold Saturday in a United States Football League scrimmage at Long Beach.
Young hit Jojo Townsell on a six-yard scoring pass and found David Hersey for a one-yard touchdown following a 71-yard pass play to Malcolm Moore as the Express built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Gold came back on Vince Evans’ 13-yard touchdown pass to Lonnie Turner, but Tony Zendejas kicked a 28-yard field goal to give the Express a 17-7 lead at halftime.
Denver got a 49-yard field goal from Jon Poole in the third quarter and pulled even on a 20-yard scoring pass from Evans to Troy Johnson.
Young completed 7 of 9 passes for 149 yards. His backup, Frank Seurer, hit on 6 of 10 for 113 yards.
