New Route for Freeway Extension: The California Transportation Commission has adopted a new route for the extension of the Costa Mesa Freeway (California 55) between the Corona del Mar Freeway (California 73) and a point south of Coast Highway in Newport Beach.
The $99.8-million project includes 4.8 miles of widening and upgrading Route 55 and building its extension to the sea, a project announced more than a year ago by Gov. George Deukmejian at a speech in Newport Beach.
The freeway is expected to be completed in 1995.
The new route, favored by local officials, runs parallel to and east of Newport Boulevard between Industrial Way and Bay Street, where it merges with the previously adopted alignment.
