Kansas City Kings Ask NBA’s OK for Move to Sacramento

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A spokesman for the Kansas City Kings announced today that the club has applied to the National Basketball Assn. to relocate the franchise in Sacramento, Calif., for the 1985-86 season.

Kings President and General Manager Joe Axelson said that the decision was irrevocable and that Kansas City’s hope for an NBA team in the future would have to come from expansion.

Axelson said that although city officials had recently made efforts to improve the lease situation at Kemper Arena, “income and attendance problems clearly override the new lease provision overtures.”
