A Los Angeles federal judge has overturned a jury’s $3-million award to members of a Santa Paula family who were seriously burned in Texas after their Volkswagen van rolled over and burst into flames, attorneys said. The order by Senior U.S. District Judge Jesse Curtis overturned a jury verdict against Volkswagen of America. A six-member jury panel returned a judgment against Volkswagen in November, finding that the family’s 1958 van was poorly designed, contributing to the August, 1982, accident. Jim Pagliuso, attorney for the Ventura County family, said Curtis did not agree with the facts that led to the award for Douglas Roy Jr., his wife and two children. Pagliuso said the judge’s decision will be appealed.
