A U.S. Air Force helicopter sent to evacuate a sick seaman from a merchant ship crashed on the vessel, killing six crewmen and leaving a seventh missing and presumed dead. The HH-53 helicopter crashed and started a fire aboard the Asian Beauty, a Panamanian-registered ship that was 540 nautical miles north of Honolulu, Air Force spokesman Sgt. Paul Chute said. The copter was to have evacuated a British seaman.
