The animal rights group that claimed responsibility for the theft of more than 100 animals from the City of Hope National Medical Center in December should be “congratulated” for bringing to light alleged mistreatment of animals in medical research, Los Angeles Animal Regulation Commissioner Arthur L. Margolis said. Margolis also proposed legislation requiring “full disclosure” of the use of animals by scientific research institutions in Los Angeles. The City of Hope is in Duarte and not under the commission’s jurisdiction. Contending that documents obtained by Animal Liberation Front members during their raid of the City of Hope facility show that a number of animals died because of “negligence and bad care,” Margolis urged the commission to take a public stand on the controversial animal rights issue.
