Chevron Corp. agreed to pay “significant” damages to 78 families living near Fullerton’s McColl hazardous waste site. A lawyer for the residents said Chevron and its subsidiary, Chevron USA, were among “lesser” defendants in the dozen lawsuits filed by those who believe their health or property values were damaged by the dump. Attorney Jeffrey Matz said the settlement, which is subject to a Feb. 28 hearing in Orange County Superior Court, was a “breaking of the ice, a significant step forward” in the damage actions. While not disclosing the amount of the settlement, Matz called it “a significant sum, not trivial.”
