Wendel Clark scored at 13:43 of the third period as Team Canada tied Czechoslovakia, 2-2, to win the world junior hockey championship at Helsinki, Finland.
Canada and Czechoslovakia finished the round-robin tournament with 5-0-2 records, but Canada was awarded the gold medal because of a better goal differential--the difference between its goals-for and goals-against.
The Soviet Union defeated Finland, 6-5, to finish third with a 5-2 record.
The gold medal was Canada’s second in the tournament’s eight-year history. Canada also won in 1982, when the tournament was held at Rochester, Minn.
