WASHINGTON — The United States has asked Cuba to return to American custody a convicted mass murderer who hijacked an American Airlines flight to Cuba on Monday, the State Department said today.
The Virgin Islands-to-New York flight was hijacked by Ishmael Ali LaBeet, convicted in the slayings of eight people in St. Croix in 1972. LaBeet was being transferred to the federal penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pa., from the Virgin Islands. He commandeered the plane after overpowering three guards. (Story on Page 14.)
