A would-be bandit was shot to death Monday night in Beverly Hills night by an elderly man he tried to rob, police said.
Beverly Hills Police Lt. Frank Sarver said the intended victim, who is in his early 80s, and his wife had just entered the lobby of an apartment house in the 100 block of Maple Avenue when they were accosted by a man in his mid-20s. The assailant simulated a handgun in his pocket and demanded that they hand over their money and jewelry, Sarver said.
Instead of complying, Sarver said, the older man drew a pistol and fired at least two shots, one of which struck the bandit--who staggered outside and collapsed near the car he had left at the curb.
The wounded man was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he died about 50 minutes later.
Sarver said the elderly man and his wife were not detained. Their names and that of the dead man were not immediately disclosed.
