Baseball: Esperanza leads Mater Dei, 2-1

Anaheim Esperanza, only 5-9-1 this season, holds a 2-1 lead over No. 2-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei going into the bottom of the third inning of their National Classic semifinal game at Cal State Fullerton.

The winner will face Lake Forest El Toro in Thursday’s championship game at 7 p.m. at Fullerton.

Mater Dei starting pitcher Ian McCarthy hit a batter with the bases loaded in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie.
