There is one oddity in the first-round City Section Division I schedule: fourth-seeded Cleveland will have to travel to 13th-seeded Van Nuys because Van Nuys is a league champion and Cleveland is not. Making the commute all the more painful for Cleveland will be the fact that it defeated Van Nuys, 74-51, in December.
The full first-round schedule, with all games played at 7 p.m. Thursday: No. 16 Carson at No. 1 Westchester, No. 9 Palisades at No. 8 Fremont, No. 12 Birmingham at No. 5 Sylmar, No. 4 Cleveland at No. 13 Van Nuys*, No. 14 Gardena at No. 3 Taft, No. 11 Los Angeles Jordan at No. 6 Crenshaw, No. 10 Dorsey at No. 7 Washington, No. 15 West Adams at No. 2 Fairfax.
Quarterfinal games will be Feb. 24, with the semifinals played as a doubleheader at USC’s Galen Center on Feb. 28 (noon and 2 p.m.). The championship game will be March 6 at 8 p.m. at Galen Center.
*The Cleveland-Van Nuys game might be moved to Friday because there is a previous commitment in the Van Nuys gym on Thursday.
