By just looking at the final score, Hart Coach Mike Herrington knows it may sound a little weird that he wasn’t totally pleased with how his team played against Westlake on Thursday night. The Indians walloped the Warriors, 41-16, but Herrington didn’t like how the offense performed and wants to see more improvement before their Foothill League opener against Canyon on Oct. 12.
“We scored a bunch of points, but we weren’t happy with the execution and performance,” Herrington said. “We let the kids know that and, hopefully, we’ll see some changes in our next game.
“Our defense played well, but our offense had breakdowns all over the place.”
With a team that’s still undefeated, it might seem Herrington is being a little nit-picky, but it’s only because he knows how competitive the Foothill League will be.
Canyon still remains a huge threat to the league title and strong performances by Saugus and even West Ranch have definitely been noticed by the Hart coaching staff.
“And Valencia has played a tough schedule against Southern California powerhouses like Birmingham and Orange Lutheran,” Herrington said. “We know they’re going to be tough too.”
As for the boys on Newhall Avenue, Herrington knows his team is capable of rising to the challenge. QB B.R. Holbrook has surprised everyone outside the Hart coaching staff with his ability to lead the offense. Through three games, he’s passed for 540 yards and six TDs and has rushed for 241 yards and two TDs. RB Delano Howell and WR Brian Felt (another pleasant surprise) have also done well.
“We knew [Holbrook] would be a good enough athlete, but half the battle is mental when you’re a QB,” Herrington said. “We’re happy with his development.”
Of course, as good as the offense can be, Hart’s defense is its strength. It’s held opponents to an average of slightly more than 13 points a game and they held Westlake to only six completed passes. UCLA-bound LB Patrick Larimore has a team-leading 14 tackles and two sacks so far (he also blocked a punt against Westlake).
