Florida and USC are 1-2 in a very, very, VERY early BCS race

Sorry Texas, you’re out already.

If the Bowl Championship Series was played Friday night at the Rose Bowl instead of Jan. 7, Florida and USC would be vying for the national title and Texas would be as mad as it was last year for getting left out of the title mix.

Trying to project the BCS standings after one week is silly, of course, but people still do it: Samuel Chi -- a sportswriter and graduate of a school, Cal State Fullerton, that dropped football years ago -- is already posting BCS updates on his BCS Guru website.

Chi is legit and has the formula nailed down, but it’s a little too early to get excited or upset, the reason the real BCS standings aren’t released until Oct. 18.

For entertainment purposes only: Guru’s top BCS teams after one week are Florida, USC, Texas, Alabama and Oklahoma State.

Brigham Young checks in at No. 8, but Chi is already worried the Cougars’ national title hopes are doomed because the USA Today voting coaches only moved BYU up to No. 12 after last weekend’s win over No. 3 Oklahoma.

Imagine that, the coaches not having their finger on football’s polling pulse? Guru is also using the AP poll in the BCS formula in place of the Harris Index, which is taking the wise course of letting the schools play a few games before posting. Three of the six BCS computer rankings are also not posting yet. .

UCLA, the first No.1 team in BCS standings history back in 1998, is No. 39 in the Guru Index this week.

There’s no harm in having a look at Chi’s standings; just make sure you read the warning label.
