Pianist Stephen Hough remembers Ernest Fleischmann

Stephen Hough, the famed British classical pianist, will play at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a program that includes pieces by Brahms and Smetana.
In an online article this week in the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, Hough writes about the first time he played at the Bowl in 1985 on an invitation from Ernest Fleischmann, the L.A. Philharmonic’s top man who passed away in June.
Hough doesn’t skirt around the fact that Fleischmann could be a difficult person and an exacting manager.
‘He was a man of strong opinions, of vision, of the sort of intense energy which swept all along with him or else pushed it aside,’ writes the pianist about Fleischmann.
‘But despite disagreeing with him on a number of things (usually not voiced -– he was not an easy man with whom to disagree), it was always clear that he was passionate and deeply knowledgeable about music –- the notes in the score and their vibrations in the air, not the vapid print or hot air which so often surrounds those notes today.’
